Where Craftsmanship Meets Precision

At Pak Gravure System, we don’t just manufacture gravure cylinders—we lay the groundwork for flawless printing. Backed by decades of hands-on experience, a skilled team, and the latest in machine technology, we consistently deliver cylinders that exceed today’s demanding print standards. As a result, our clients enjoy sharper prints, improved consistency, and fewer production issues.

What is a Gravure Cylinder?

In the gravure printing process, the cylinder plays a central role. Each one contains thousands of tiny, precision-engraved cells that carry ink and transfer it directly onto the printing surface, such as paper, film, or foil. Because the design is etched into the cylinder, gravure printing delivers highly detailed images, vibrant color, and remarkable repeatability—even over extremely long runs. Therefore, it is the preferred method for high-volume packaging, decorative laminates, and premium labels.

Why Cylinder Quality Is Crucial

A low-quality cylinder can compromise the entire print process. Uneven copper plating, incorrect engraving depth, or flawed chrome coating can all lead to inconsistent ink coverage, registration errors, and material waste. This is why we leave nothing to chance. We follow a comprehensive 11-step manufacturing workflow that ensures each cylinder meets the highest quality standards before reaching your press.

Our 11-Step Gravure Cylinder Manufacturing Process

1. Design File Preparation

First, we review and prepare your artwork using professional software. This includes color separation, resolution adjustment, trapping, and layout optimization. As a result, the engraving reflects your design with exceptional accuracy.

2. Pipe Preparation

Next, we fabricate the mild steel pipe to match your required dimensions. Our team balances the cylinder and cleans its surface thoroughly. Consequently, this step allows for perfect copper adhesion and alignment during printing.

3. Degreasing

After shaping, we degrease the cylinder to remove oils and contaminants that might interfere with plating. This step is crucial for maintaining bond integrity between steel and copper.

4. Alkaline Pre-Copper Plating

We apply a thin alkaline copper layer that serves as a bonding agent. Moreover, it improves surface conductivity for the main copper coating.

5. Copper Plating

The cylinder undergoes electroplating in a copper tank. During this stage, we build up a uniform copper layer thick enough to support detailed engraving. Our technicians closely monitor plating thickness and quality in real time.

6. Finishing and Polishing

Once plated, the cylinder is machined to exact tolerances and polished to achieve the required surface smoothness. We also measure and verify surface roughness at this stage to ensure accuracy.

7. Engraving

This is where your design comes to life. Using advanced electromechanical or laser engraving systems, we etch cells of precise depth, shape, and volume into the copper. As a result, the cylinder ensures clean, defined graphics and perfect ink release on press.

8. Cleaning Post-Engraving

Following the engraving, we clean the cylinder to remove dust and prepare it for chrome plating. This step is vital for achieving a clean, even chrome layer.

9. Chrome Plating

We apply a protective chrome layer over the engraved copper. This coating enhances durability, adds hardness, and prevents ink buildup—thereby extending the cylinder’s operational life.

10. Final Polishing

Then, we polish the chrome surface to a consistent finish. This ensures smooth ink transfer and minimizes dot gain, contributing to superior image clarity.

11. Proofing and Quality Check

Finally, we test the cylinder on a proofing press. Our team assesses the engraved design for accuracy, ink density, register alignment, and print clarity. Only cylinders that meet all quality benchmarks proceed to dispatch. Otherwise, they are corrected and rechecked.

Once approved, your cylinder is press-ready and production-safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many impressions can a gravure cylinder deliver?

Our chrome-plated cylinders typically last up to 1.2 million impressions. With regular cleaning and care, some can last even longer.

Is it possible to reuse or re-engrave old cylinders?

Yes. If the copper depth remains intact and the structure is stable, we can polish and re-engrave it. This approach is both economical and environmentally friendly.

What file types do you accept?

We accept PDF, AI, TIFF, and CorelDraw formats. Our prepress experts are available to optimize your files if needed.
